Diablo Country Club is seeking a Golf Course Superintendent with proven agronomic and leadership skills with a passion for classic golf course architecture, providing exceptional golfing conditions, team leadership and an effective communicator.

Diablo Country Club sits on a remarkable stretch of land at the base of Mount Diablo. in the rolling hills of the East Bay region of San Francisco, CA. The Club’s golf course was originally designed by Jack Neville in 1915, expanded to 18 holes by William Watson a few years later before they went on to design Pebble Beach and The Olympic Club. The course was fully renovated and restored by Todd Eckenrode in 2020, The original and masterful routing remains, and the result ranked #18 in the “Best Courses In California” list and one of the “50 Best In The West” by GOLF Magazine.

 

The fully renovated green complexes are established in the latest bentgrass varieties, with all other turf converted to drought-tolerant bermudagrasses. A state-of-the-art irrigation system was installed, and more than 35 acres of land were turned into native areas that require little to no water.

 

Diablo Country Club has broken ground on a $22 million renovation and enhancement project across all areas of Club operations, to complete a Facilities Master Plan approved by its members. The new project, was completed by Spring 2024, will finish out a total of $34 million the Club has committed to enhance the membership experience for “generations to come.” The new phase includes renovations to Diablo’s historic clubhouse, construction of a new Fitness Center; renovations to the Tennis Pavilion, Childcare Center, and Ladies’ Locker Room and Lounge; exhibition pickleball court; new permanent Bocce Ball courts; and a new indoor Golf Simulator.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

As the Golf Course Superintendent, you will oversee the maintenance and evolution of the 18-hole golf course, practice facilities, and landscaping across the Club. You will lead an agronomy team that ensures the turf grass and course features are repaired and maintained to established standards. In this position, you are expected to provide quality leadership, while creating a friendly and open atmosphere, to ensure superb playing and practicing conditions for all members and guests on a daily basis. In addition to strong leadership, this role requires meticulous attention to detail and a passion for golf course management and turf care.

 

 

The Golf Course Superintendent (GCS) reports to the General Manager and liaises with the Head Golf Professional and the Green Committee. The GCS is expected to provide quality leadership and will lead and manage his/her department to ensure superb golf course conditioning on a daily basis. The GCS is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Diablo Country Club golf course and grounds.

 

Continuing education, professional development, and staying at the forefront of research and technology are necessary for success. In addition, the GCS will provide innovative, relevant leadership and will perpetuate and foster an educational culture of developing and producing future turf professionals. The GCS must be a great communicator and have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with members and staff along with a love of the game of golf and a relentless attention to detail.

 

INITIAL AREAS OF FOCUS

· Providing exceptional playing conditions.

· Develop a plan to improve maturation and quality of the native areas.

· Continued focus on a high level of detail work.

· Evaluation of the departments overall organization and systems.

 

 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate will be a Golf Course Superintendent or the First Assistant at a top-tier club with a minimum of five years’ experience.

Plans, organizes and directs the maintenance and construction of greens, green surrounds, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, natural waterways, lakes, and native areas

Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turf grasses, trees and ornamental plants

Experience controlling bermudagrass contamination into other playing surfaces

Is detail-oriented, with success at maintaining edges of the course in addition to primary playing corridors

Leverage continuing education resources to stay at the forefront of research and technology

Frequent and timely communications with the General Manager, Head Golf Professional and Green Committee

Maintains the Bocce Ball courts and club landscaping

 

 

· Successful experience with managing USGA bentgrass greens

· Ability to acquire a California pesticide applicators license

· Familiar with and successful experience Bermuda fairways

· Experience with effluent irrigation water

· Experience with treatment and use of effluent is desirable

· Understanding of all pest control techniques

· Solid irrigation management philosophy and practices

· Strong agronomic skills - stays current with advances in turf technology and equipment

· Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions and landscape at the highest level

· Subscribes to sustainable maintenance practices (e.g. firm and fast, sound irrigation philosophy)

· High-energy, focused leader

· Possesses leadership qualities that resulted in high employee satisfaction-proven staff retention, low turnover

· Strong relationship builder with a history of excellent relations with their Director of Golf/Head Golf Professional and General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

· Experienced with formal standard operating procedures, training programs, and golf course maintenance standards.

· Experience mentoring team members

· Proven success in developing assistants to promotion

· Excellent communication skills-listens to and responds to both club members and team members

· Strong budget management and forecasting (zero based) skills

· Technologically savvy and comfortable with basic business, web and application software

· Strong observational skills, detail oriented

· Highly organized

· Experience with “fine-tuning” completed golf course renovations

· Golfer/student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions and a passion for the game

· High Golf IQ is essential

· Spanish language skills are a plus

· Experience with various California regulations for business and golf course is desirable

 

EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS

 

A minimum of a two-year associate’s degree in turf management or related field of study, GCSAA Certification is preferred.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

 

The salary is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The club offers an excellent bonus and benefits package including association membership, continuing educational funding, vacation, uniform or clothing allowance, company vehicle, medical insurance, etc.

Salary Range: $175,000-$215,000
